Fremantle prison
A maximum-security jail from 1852 until 1991, Fremantle Prison is now open to the public as a historic monument offering tours during the day and after-dark.
Fremantle prison is classed as a World Heritage Site and is considered one of Australia’s most fascinating cultural attractions.
The prison illustrates a system of punishment that’s uncomfortably recent!

Quirky shopping in Fremantle
The Fremantle Market comes to life every Friday, Saturday & Sunday, but the local area is also home to an incredible mix of independent boutique retailers open most days.
Our favourites include The Artisan Store, South of the Border, Common Ground Collective, and the Chart & Map Shop (a treasure trove for those with wanderlust!).

Art galleries
Of all Fremantle’s galleries, Kidogo Arthouse is one of our top picks. Housed in a beautiful, heritage-listed building by the ocean, it’s worth a visit just to see the limestone construction (originally a kerosene store!).
Venture inside, and you’ll be impressed by ever-changing exhibitions from international & local artists. Pop into the gift store for a unique souvenir to take home.
Another great art gallery (and fabulous coffee shop to boot) is Moore & Moore on Henry Street. You’ll often find unusual exhibitions from local artists and photographers.
Fremantle Craft Beer & Breweries
After a busy day of exploring, there’s no place better activity than savouring a craft beer from one of the excellent Fremantle microbreweries.
Gage Roads just opened their new venue which has a great view of the inner harbour, right by the water not far from the quirky B Shed markets.
Little Creatures is one of the most popular spots, being one of Australia’s leading microbreweries. You’ll find Little Creatures beers in many venues across Perth, and Australia as a whole. The name is synonymous with Fremantle.
In the town, opposite Freo markets, you’ll find the Sail & Anchor as the original craft brew place opened by Matilda Bay (Redback). They have a great range of WA micro brews, and the balcony has a fantastic view of the street performers outside the markets.
A newer addition to Fremantle’s microbrewery scene is Running With Thieves. It’s a bit of a walk to South Fremantle (Postcode 6162), but it’s well worth it, and make sure you check out the quirky furniture store East West Design while you’re there!
Even in wintertime, any of Fremantle’s craft beer venues will offer you some of the best beers in the world combined with wonderful food.
